JANE GIBBENS

I draw my inspiration from reflection, from scale and from precision. I trained in the UK as a Trompe L'oeil artist and this still heavily influences my work.

My aim, always, is to create the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional canvas. Currently I am exploring the scaling up of gemstones, by enlarging the stones I try to capture

the fascinating interplay of light and shadow not usually seen without a magnifying glass. These pieces take upwards of 100 hours to produce.

I work predominantly in oils on custom-made boards which are exact scaled-up replicas of real jewels.

My work is both photorealistic - when viewed at a distance, and abstract - when viewed up close I hope my paintings encourage contemplation and introspection.
